Worried about washing your borg hoodies for the first time?
They’re so soft, so snuggly, so incredibly cosy. Quite frankly, it would be heart-breaking to ruin them with a boil wash – enough to make a grown adult cry. Which is why, as a proud supplier of this glorious type of garment, we thought we’d give you a few pointers.
The truth is, despite their super fluffy texture, borg lined hoodies are actually pretty easy to maintain. You just need to know the basics.
Read on to avoid any borg-related laundry traumas.
5 steps to wash borg lined hoodies like a pro
1. Check the label
It’s laundry rule no.1 – always read the label first.
Here at Tokyo Laundry, our teddy borg hoodies are usually machine washable. But, depending on the specific style and combination of fabrics used, there may be special instructions on how to wash it. So before you whack it in the washer, it’s wise to take a quick look at the inside tag.
Better to be safe than sorry, and all that.
2. Load up with borg
As a lover of borg sweatshirts, you’ll need three laundry baskets in your bedroom: one for whites, one for darks and one for borg lined heroes. Though it may seem like a hassle, separating your borg hoodies and washing these on their own is the best way to preserve the fabric.
Make sure the pockets are empty – laundered paper can leave the garment covered in lint (which is a headache to get off!). And once the machine is loaded up, add a gentle detergent.
Powder or liquid? It doesn’t really matter. But try to avoid products that contain bleach, chlorine and (ironically) fabric softeners, as these can ruin the super softness of the borg.
3. Be gentle
For best results, we recommend using your machine’s gentlest cycle – ideally, a ‘delicates’ setting – and washing your borg lined hoodies at a cool temperature.
Not only could hot water potentially damage the fabric (causing excessive pilling), it’s really bad for the environment too. And contrary to popular belief, there’s absolutely no need to wash clothes at 40+˚C to kill germs and get rid of any stains or smells.
Thanks to technological advances in both washing machines and detergents, cold-water washing is now highly effective. Forget Gran’s old-school laundry tips. Just use the right amount of liquid or powder, be kind to the planet, and wash all clothing – borg lined or otherwise – at 30˚C or less.
4. Let nature do its thing
The tumble dryer is strictly off-limits.
Even a light heat cycle can cause a lot of damage. So the best option is to take your borg hoodies out of the washing machine, reshape them whilst damp and hang them on a clothesline or drying rack.
The exact amount of time they’ll take to air dry will depend on the temperature, humidity and the effectiveness of your washer’s spin cycle. But due to their thickness, on average, you’ll probably need to wait about 4-5 hours. Just keep checking back to see if they’re dry.
5. Fluff it up
Last but by no means least, to keep borg looking as good as new (i.e. super soft and fluffy), simply run your fingers through the fabric. This will loosen up the fibres and prevent any matting. Stay far away from the iron and just pop your hoodies on a coat hanger to let the creases fall out naturally.
Top tip: If you spot any pilling (and have a steady hand), use a disposable razor to gently shave upwards against the grain of the fabric. This will remove the bobbles, without harming the borg.
